ABOUT THE CO-OP PROGRAM
The Anderson National College co-operative education (co-op) program enables students to enrich their educational experience by providing them the opportunity to gain valuable and practical work experience in positions related to their course of study.
The co-op program formally integrates a student's academic studies with relevant work experience with local companies. For successful completion towards a co-op diploma, it is compulsory for a student to complete the co-op work component between their academic periods of study.
The Co-op Program consists of in-class workshops & activities and the co-op work term. Students must attend and participate in all workshops before proceeding with their work term.
POLICIES AND REGULATIONS
All certificate and diploma programs at Anderson National College (“ANC”) which are designated as co-operative (“co-op”) or practicum education programs are based upon the bylaws of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education and compliant with the PCTIA bylaws. The co-op or practicum education program at ANC formally integrates a student's academic studies with work experience in employer organizations. The program is in accordance with the following criteria:
Each work placement is developed and/or approved by the ANC Co-op Education program as a suitable learning situation. Students are placed either as a practicum student or as a co-op student through the ANC co-op department.
A “co-op placement” is a required and competitively paid work period within a program of study related to an essential element of the program where the total of all placements does not exceed 50 percent of the time spent in institutional study. The co-op placement must be approved as a suitable learning situation and work must be performed for and evaluated under the supervision of a person qualified in the appropriate field and monitored by the ANC for progress and performance.
A “practicum placement” is a supervised and mandatory portion of the educational program emphasizing the practical application of the previously learned theory, methods, skills, professionalism, orientation and ethics in a specialized area of study. Students will be supervised and evaluated by the employer and monitored by the co-op department while engaged in productive work where no remuneration is received.
In order to successfully complete the ANC co-op education program, students must follow and be aware of the following:
- Be registered, full time ANC students
- Register for the ANC co-op education program
- Maintain 90% attendance for classroom instructions
- Maintain a grade point average in good standing
- According to CIC Foreign Workers Manual, employment should be ‘an essential and integral part of your course of study.
Students will alternate periods of study with periods of employment in a formalized sequence beginning with and ending with an academic term.
Submit an employer's evaluation
Submit a co-op student report
International students require a valid student work permit in order to participate in the co-op education program.
SCHEDULE
Students will alternate periods of study with periods of employment in a formalized sequence beginning with and ending with an academic term. Work can be done on a part-time or full-time basis within this period. Students should also be aware that their job must be an essential and integral part of their course of study. Therefore prior to accepting a position with a company, it should have the approval of the co-op coordinator. At ANC we remind our students that school is first and foremost; in other words, work schedules cannot conflict with their school schedules.
